Subway
The Q train runs under Second Avenue with stops at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets, opened in 2017. It connects to Midtown and continues to Brooklyn. West of Third Avenue, the 4, 5 and 6 run under Lexington Avenue. The 4 and 5 are express and stop at 86th Street, while the 6 is local.
Buses
The M15 runs along First and Second Avenues. Crosstown buses on streets such as 79th and 86th link the east side to the west side and to Central Park.
The block matters
A block beside Second Avenue puts you a short walk from the Q. Apartments near East End Avenue are farther from any station, and the walk to Lexington can be a long one in winter. Walk the route yourself at the time you would commute before you decide.
Driving and Connecticut trips
The FDR Drive runs along the river. Parking is limited and garages in the area are costly, so ask whether a building has its own garage. For Connecticut weekends, the 4, 5 and 6 reach Grand Central Terminal, where Metro-North's New Haven Line starts. The Harlem-125th Street station is also reachable from Lexington Avenue.
