East of Lexington to York Avenue
Newer buildings, the river and a major cluster of hospitals and research institutions.
Where it is
The eastern blocks of Lenox Hill from Lexington Avenue to the East River, in the 60s and 70s. York Avenue holds a medical and research campus: Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and the Hospital for Special Surgery sit between roughly the low 60s and low 70s. Lenox Hill Hospital stands farther west, on East 77th Street.
The buildings
- Postwar and newer condo towers and co-ops, many with doormen and amenities.
- Mid-rise elevator buildings on the side streets.
- Hunter College anchors the western edge, at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue.
Who it suits
Physicians, researchers and hospital staff who want a short walk to work, and buyers who want newer buildings near the river.
Less suited to: Buyers who want a traditional townhouse block or a Fifth or Park Avenue address.
The walk to the train
The Q stops at 72nd Street on Second Avenue, and the Q and F at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street. The M15, M31 and M72 serve the area, and the Roosevelt Island Tramway leaves from Second Avenue and East 60th Street.
For the whole neighborhood, see Getting around Lenox Hill.
Trade-offs
- Blocks beside the hospitals can have ambulance and delivery traffic.
- A longer walk to the 4, 5 and 6 from the river side.
- Fewer of the classic pre-war buildings found west of Lexington.
